Not Every Shoe Fits - Choosing the right shoe for you.
What shoe suits your style of running?
Choosing a new running shoe can be a difficult task. Trail, road, maximal, minimal, zero drop (what does that even mean?); the choices can seem overwhelming, not to mention choosing a brand. One of the most common questions from runners at Mountain Sport Clinic is about their running shoes.
Running shoes can easily be split into two camps - trail and road. To the naked eye the main difference is the obvious larger tread on the sole of a trail shoe. However, trail shoes are made with a more durable outsole, burlier traction for grip on rocks/roots/wet surfaces, and often have lateral support to allow for running on uneven ground.

When trying on a Trail Running Shoe:
Find a toe box that fits your foot. Avoid compression side to side on your foot.
Make sure you can wiggle your toes and that there is 1 thumb width of space from the end of your toes to the end of the shoe.
It should be comfortable! Avoid shoes with pressure points, especially around the heel. You should not need a significant break-in period.
Select your level of Drop and Cushioning:
Generally, opt for a shoe with less cushioning and a smaller drop. This can help you strengthen your feet!
If you have a history of long-term foot/ Achilles/calf issues, opt for a shoe that has 5-10 mm drop and more cushioning.
There are many other options!
Rock guards for rocky terrain
Bigger lugs for mud
More cushioning for ultra distances!
